Dialysis services have officially commenced at Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Hospital, with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inaugurating the new facility during his visit to Mahibadhoo on 7 October 2025.
As part of the opening ceremony, the President toured the dialysis unit, inspected the facilities, and met with hospital staff to discuss the delivery of specialised healthcare services in the atoll.
Kidney disease remains one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in the Maldives, with many patients requiring regular dialysis treatment. To meet the rising demand, the Government has expanded dialysis care nationwide—establishing 19 operational units across nine atolls, in addition to the original two centres. Services are currently being prepared for launch in Vaavu, Faafu, and Dhaalu Atolls.
The introduction of dialysis services at Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Hospital is expected to significantly ease the travel burden for patients, providing them with timely access to life-sustaining treatment within their atoll. The new facility reflects the Administration’s continued commitment to strengthening the healthcare network and ensuring equitable access to essential medical services across the Maldives.
