Joe Thompson, the former professional footballer who played over 200 games for Rochdale and was a beloved figure in the football community, has passed away at the age of 36.

Rochdale FC, Thompson’s former club, expressed their devastation at the loss, saying in a statement that he passed away "peacefully at home" on Thursday, surrounded by his family. The club described him as a "warm personality" with a deep connection to the club from a young age.

Thompson, who retired from professional football in 2019, had been fighting cancer for several years. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013 while playing for Tranmere Rovers and bravely battled the illness, making multiple recoveries. Tragically, his cancer returned for a third time last year, a battle he fought courageously until his passing.

His wife, Chantelle, paid an emotional tribute on Instagram, describing Thompson as "the most incredible husband, son, brother, friend and father." She shared that he "made such an impact on so many people" and was loved by everyone who knew him.

Thompson’s career also included stints with Bury, Carlisle United, and loan spells at Wrexham and Southport. He began his professional journey with Manchester United’s academy before joining Rochdale in 2005, where he became a key figure for the club over the next decade.

Thompson's courage both on and off the field, particularly in his brave fight against cancer, has left an indelible mark on those who knew him.
