The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) headquarters in Mirpur was raided this week by anti-corruption officials, amid rising concerns over alleged match-fixing incidents during the most recent season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
The raid follows a BCB-initiated investigation into suspicious behaviour observed during multiple matches of the franchise-based tournament. In response, the board has formed a three-member independent inquiry committee to assist its Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). The committee comprises:
- Justice Mirza Hussain Haider, former appellate division judge
- Shakil Kasem, former national cricketer
- Dr. Khaled H. Chowdhury, an international lawyer
This marks the first formal corruption probe into the BPL since 2013, when a major scandal rocked the tournament’s credibility.
Currently, ten players—eight local and two foreign nationals—and four franchises are under scrutiny: Dhaka, Sylhet, Chattogram, and Rajshahi. Investigators are focusing on suspicious patterns such as suspect no-balls, sudden collapses in batting performance, and questionable squad decisions that raised red flags.
In an official statement, the BCB reaffirmed its stance on integrity and transparency:
Faruque Ahmed, newly appointed President of the BCB, also spoke publicly on the issue. He acknowledged that corruption and internal irregularities have plagued the board for over a decade, and pledged to address the problems head-on to restore faith in the sport.
Sources close to the probe suggest that early findings point to deeper structural problems in franchise management, including potential links to illegal betting syndicates.
As the BPL continues to command national passion and international attention, the unfolding investigation is being closely monitored by fans, players, sponsors, and global cricket authorities. The outcomes could have far-reaching consequences for Bangladesh cricket.
