Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Hon. Abdul Raheem Abdulla, reaffirmed the Maldives’ dedication to the Bandung Principles during his address at the 4th Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Parliamentary Network, held on the sidelines of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Speaking on the theme “Commemorating 70 years of the Bandung Spirit: The Role of Parliaments in Upholding the Bandung Principles”, Speaker Abdul Raheem highlighted the enduring relevance of the Bandung values — sovereignty, non-interference, and international cooperation — especially in the face of rising global challenges.

Underscoring the existential threat climate change poses to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives, the Speaker issued a passionate call for urgent and collective climate action. He urged NAM member parliaments to lead with environmental justice, especially in protecting the nations most vulnerable to the climate crisis.

The Speaker also outlined key legislative milestones achieved by the Maldives Parliament in driving inclusive and equitable development, such as the Social Protection Act and the Decentralization Act, which have empowered local communities and strengthened grassroots governance. He noted that parliamentary committees — including the National Development and Heritage Committee and the Human Rights and Gender Committee — play crucial oversight roles to ensure alignment with national goals.

In conclusion, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla called on all NAM parliaments to stand united in promoting peace, defending sovereignty, and advancing justice:

The Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network serves as a key platform for legislative cooperation among NAM countries, advancing the principles of equality, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.
