President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday, has ratified Act No: 3/2024, or the Anti-Defection Bill.
The Bill was passed in the 20th sitting of the first session of parliament on Monday, April 1, 2024.
The new law applies to Members of Parliament, members of Atoll and Island Parliaments, and members of the Women's Development Committee. If they change parties, they will all have to resign from their political positions.
For seats left vacant due to defections or party changes, the Election Commission (EC) is responsible to hold by-elections to elect new members in accordance with the law. Members who lose their seats also have the right to contend this by-election.
In the 18th parliament, an anti-defection law was also passed, but during the political unrest in 2018, the same parliament annulled this law.
