R. Vaadhoo, Maldives: Raa Atoll's Vaadhoo Island has earned international recognition, being featured by CNN among its list of "15 of Nature's Most Spectacular Shows," highlighting the island's world-famous bioluminescent shoreline, popularly known as the "Sea of Stars."
CNN describes Vaadhoo as one of the few places on Earth where visitors can witness millions of microscopic marine organisms illuminating the shoreline with a brilliant blue glow at night. The breathtaking phenomenon is caused by bioluminescent phytoplankton, which emit light when disturbed by waves or movement in the water, creating the illusion of a sky full of stars reflected on the ocean.
The feature places Vaadhoo alongside some of the world's most remarkable natural spectacles, recognizing the island as a destination where nature delivers one of its most unforgettable displays.
Located in the northern Maalhosmadulu (Raa) Atoll, Vaadhoo has become internationally renowned for the seasonal "Sea of Stars" phenomenon, attracting photographers, nature enthusiasts and tourists from around the world. While the glowing shoreline can occur in different parts of the Maldives, Vaadhoo remains the destination most closely associated with the natural wonder.
