World cup: Morocco's Unbeaten Run Faces Host Test

The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 gets underway with an intriguing clash as Morocco take on co-hosts Canada in what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.

Morocco arrive in the knockout stage carrying one of international football's most impressive records, having gone 33 consecutive matches unbeaten. Road to the Round of 16

Morocco finished second in Group C, advancing behind Brazil after collecting important results against Scotland and Haiti. In the Round of 32, Morocco produced another resilient display, defeating the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.

Canada topped Group B ahead of Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar. The hosts then edged South Africa 1-0 in the Round of 32 to book their place in the last 16.

Morocco and Canada have met only once previously at the FIFA World Cup. The Atlas Lions defeated Canada 2-1 during the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with Morocco going on to become the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final.
