Maldives Elected as Vice-Chair of UN General Assembly’s Economic and Financial Committee

The Maldives has achieved a significant diplomatic milestone after being elected as the Vice-Chair of the United Nations General Assembly’s Economic and Financial Committee. The election, which took place at the UN Headquarters in New York, saw the Maldives securing the prestigious seat by a unanimous consensus of the General Assembly members. This appointment marks a prominent addition to the archipelago's growing leadership footprint on the global stage.

Representing the Maldives in this vital position will be Hussain Azhaan Mohamed Hussain, the Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations. In his role as Vice-Chair, he will work alongside the Committee's Chair and other Bureau members to guide administrative and substantive tasks. The Maldives is prepared to play a pivotal role in steering the committee's agenda forward to ensure all developmental objectives are thoroughly addressed.

The Maldives will hold this position throughout the upcoming 81st Session of the UN General Assembly, which is scheduled to span from September 2026 to September 2027. Popularly known as the "Second Committee," the Economic and Financial Committee is one of the six main committees of the UN General Assembly, tasked with shaping global policies on macroeconomic growth, sustainability, and poverty eradication. The committee's expansive mandate is directed entirely by its Bureau, which retains full authority to organize and oversee all international sessions and resolutions.
