Candidates contesting the upcoming People’s Majlis Bi-election for the Hithadhoo Uthuru constituency officially signed the final voters' registry today, marking a key step forward in the electoral timeline.
The signing took place at the Elections Commission (EC) Election Centre between 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM.
According to official statistics released by the EC, a total of 4,121 individuals are eligible to cast their ballots in this bi-election. To accommodate voters, the commission has decided to set up seven polling stations: two will be located in the capital Malé City, while the remaining five will be stationed in Addu City.
The parliamentary seat became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling concerning the constituency's previously elected member, Mohamed Sinan, who won the seat in the 2024 parliamentary elections. Sinan was disqualified after the apex court ruled that he failed to clear a proven debt in accordance with a lower court judgment, thereby violating the constitutional qualifications required to hold a parliamentary seat.
When the candidacy window closed, only two political heavyweights had thrown their hats into the ring. The upcoming ballot will feature a direct head-to-head contest between:
- Ahmed Saeed – Representing the ruling Peoples National Congress (PNC).
- Abdullah Sadiq – Representing the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
With the formal verification and signing of the voters' list completed by both candidates, the Elections Commission is now putting the final logistical arrangements in place ahead of polling day.
