Shadows and Sharks: The Thrill of Night Snorkelling at Ellaidhoo Maldives
BusinessAhmed Shurau
While most island travellers wind down as the sun dips below the horizon, a brave group of adventurers at Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon is just getting started.
When darkness falls over the Indian Ocean, the resort’s famed house reef undergoes a dramatic transformation, turning a familiar daytime paradise into a mysterious, bustling underworld that can only be explored by torchlight.
A Different Kind of Nightlife
Led by the expert team from Dive & Sail Maldives, the nightly excursions begin around 6:30 PM. Armed with specialized underwater torches, snorkellers step off the shoreline into the cooled evening waters to witness a massive shift in marine behavior.
"What makes night snorkelling so fascinating is that the reef completely wakes up in the dark," says the dive team. "Species that spend the day hidden deep inside coral crevices or buried in the sandy seabed suddenly emerge to hunt and forage."
Snorkellers are treated to the sight of moray eels weaving through the terrain, octopuses gliding silently across the ocean floor, and a variety of nocturnal crustaceans crawling out from their hiding spots. Even the coral reef itself changes; under the beam of artificial light, sections of the reef glow in rich shades of crimson, gold, and orange as coral polyps extend their tiny tentacles to feed on passing currents.
A Surreal Encounter: Flying with Sharks
For many, the ultimate highlight of the night is a face-to-face encounter with the ocean’s top predators.
One guest recalled the breathtaking moment a shiver of reef sharks materialized from the gloom.
Beyond the adrenaline-pumping shark sightings, the night reef offers a closer look at smaller, hidden wonders: brightly coloured reef crabs, spiny lobsters, lionfish hovering near the drop-offs, and parrotfish tucked safely into the coral, wrapped in their protective mucus cocoons for a night of sleep.
Accessible Adventure
Widely regarded as one of the most vibrant and biologically diverse house reefs in the Maldives, Ellaidhoo’s marine habitat is uniquely accessible directly from the island’s shoreline, eliminating the need for lengthy boat rides to find world-class sea life.
For travellers looking to experience this nocturnal wonderland firsthand, the resort has launched a summer promotional package. Guests booking a stay of seven nights or more receive complimentary roundtrip speedboat transfers from the international airport, alongside exclusive perks through the Cinnamon DISCOVERY loyalty programme.
