At least four people have died in Tunisia following historic flooding caused by the heaviest rainfall in more than seven decades. The fatalities occurred in Moknine, Monastir governorate, as torrential rains disrupted daily life across multiple regions.
Civil defence and army teams are working to respond to submerged roads, stranded vehicles, and isolated neighbourhoods, with several areas cut off by floodwaters. Authorities have closed schools in Tunis, Nabeul, Sousse, and Beja, while court sessions and public transport have been suspended.
Meteorologists described the rainfall as exceptional for January, with Sidi Bou Said recording 206mm (8.1 inches) of rain since Monday evening. The National Institute of Meteorology warned that the situation remains critical in affected areas.
Rescue operations are ongoing as Tunisia deals with the scale of this historic flooding event.
