A man accused of killing prominent Ukrainian politician Andriy Parubiy has confessed to carrying out the crime, claiming it was an act of “revenge” against the country’s authorities.

Parubiy, a former chair of Ukraine’s parliament and a leading nationalist figure, was shot dead in what investigators described as a “carefully planned” attack in the western city of Lviv on Saturday.

On Tuesday, the suspect — a 52-year-old resident of Lviv whose name has not been released — admitted his involvement during a court appearance. Video footage from the courtroom showed him telling journalists: “Yes, I admit I killed him.” He insisted that the shooting was not linked to Russian special services, saying he acted out of personal anger.

According to the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect said he targeted Parubiy simply because the politician was “nearby.” After the attack, he reportedly fled into a forest, where he burned the clothes he was wearing and dismantled the bicycle he had used.

Authorities have placed the suspect in custody for 60 days while investigations continue. The killing has sent shockwaves across Ukraine, where Parubiy was a well-known political figure with decades of involvement in nationalist and parliamentary politics.
