Three individuals were rescued early Friday morning after a cargo vessel, Al Majra, capsized near Meemu Dhiggiri. The boat was en route from Malé to Thaa Veymandoo when it reportedly struck a reef and sank while carrying a large load of construction materials.
The incident was reported to Maldives Police Service at 5:34 a.m. Officers from Vaavu Atoll Station responded promptly and discovered the three individuals stranded on the reef. Authorities confirmed that all three – one Maldivian and two Bangladeshi nationals – were rescued in good health and transported to Felidhoo.
According to police, Al Majra was heavily loaded with PVC foam boards and other construction supplies. The vessel and its cargo have since sunk, with many items now being swept away by strong ocean currents. Police have urged the public and vessels in nearby waters to exercise caution.
The capsizing occurred amid adverse weather conditions currently affecting the region. The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued warnings of continued rainfall, strong winds, and rough seas associated with the southwest monsoon, expected to persist until Thursday, particularly over the northern and central atolls.
