President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially welcomed the adoption of the “New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution,” reaffirming the Maldives’ steadfast commitment to the Palestinian cause and the realization of an independent Palestinian State.
The New York Declaration, the outcome document of the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, was adopted at the United Nations Headquarters from 28–30 July 2025. The conference was co-chaired by the governments of France and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, bringing together a wide array of nations and organizations in support of a just and lasting resolution to the long-standing conflict.
In his official statement, President Muizzu described the declaration as a significant and united demonstration of international solidarity for the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people. He emphasized that the Maldives welcomes the declaration’s strong call for the recognition of the State of Palestine, including its full membership at the United Nations.
“The New York Declaration is an overwhelming show of support by the international community for the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people and for the recognition of the State of Palestine, and for its full UN membership,” President Muizzu stated.
He further underscored that the declaration also reflects a unified commitment to ensuring Palestine’s economic viability and security, particularly in light of the ongoing suffering caused by continued military aggression against Palestinians.
“It is a strong commitment by the international community to support a sustainable recovery for Palestine from Israel’s continued onslaught and to ensure Palestine’s economic feasibility and security,” the President added.
President Muizzu reiterated that the Maldives remains resolute in its support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination. He reaffirmed that the Maldives’ position aligns with long-standing principles under international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
“The Government and the people of the Republic of Maldives will continue to show firm and unwavering support for the independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” the statement concluded.
The Maldives has consistently advocated for the rights of the Palestinian people in international forums, calling for an end to occupation and violence, and urging meaningful progress toward a peaceful two-state solution. President Muizzu’s endorsement of the New York Declaration marks the latest in a series of diplomatic steps affirming the country’s commitment to justice, peace, and dignity for the Palestinian people.
