President Designates Uhdhoo as Picnic Island, Announces Key Development Projects for Meedhoo

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially designated Uhdhoo as a picnic island for the people of the southern part of Nilandhe Atoll, marking a significant step in expanding leisure opportunities for the region.

Announcing this decision during his ongoing tour of South Nilandhe Atoll, the President highlighted that Uhdhoo, which was previously privately owned, has now been returned to the Government following the expiration of its lease agreement. The island’s management has been entrusted to the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, which will oversee its operations and facilitate travel to the island. The Ministry is expected to unveil detailed plans for Uhdhoo in the coming weeks.

Key Development Initiatives for Meedhoo

During his visit to Meedhoo, President Muizzu reassured residents that comprehensive solutions for housing issues would be implemented during his tenure. He further pledged that the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry system would be operational by the end of 2025 and that the island’s waste management challenges would be addressed through Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).

As part of the government’s commitment to Meedhoo’s development, two major agreements were signed during a community meeting attended by high-ranking officials:

• Development of the WAMCO Waste Management Centre in Meedhoo
• Second Phase of Meedhoo Harbour Upgrade Project

Commitment to Education, Sports, and Infrastructure

President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Meedhoo, assuring that the projects announced would be completed without delay. He also pledged to enhance sports facilities on the island and addressed the space constraints at Meedhoo School, promising a resolution within 2025 and 2026.

Looking ahead, the President stated that the years 2025 and 2026 would mark the fulfillment of all promises made during the presidential election, instilling confidence and optimism among the residents of Meedhoo.
