The Transport Ministry and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to initiate the necessary preparations for launching a government-backed taxi service in the Greater Malé area. The signing ceremony took place at Meeruma Hotel on Wednesday.

Director General Ahmed Shameem signed the MoU on behalf of the Transport Ministry, while MTCC Managing Director, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retired) Ahmed Saudee, signed on behalf of the company.

A Safe, Reliable, and Sustainable Transport Solution

According to MTCC, the new taxi service aims to provide a safe and reliable transportation option for both residents and tourists. The service will feature an eco-friendly taxi fleet powered entirely by electric vehicles (EVs), aligning with the government’s sustainability goals.

The taxi service will operate 24/7 and will be accessible via a dedicated mobile application, allowing customers to identify and book the nearest available taxi. Additionally, passengers will have the option to make advance bookings up to seven days in advance, without any additional charges.

Government’s Fixed Fare Policy

The Transport Ministry confirmed that the taxi fares would be regulated according to the ministry’s established pricing guidelines, ensuring affordability and transparency for users.

Addressing Opposition from Private Taxi Operators

The announcement comes amid resistance from private taxi centers and drivers, who have expressed concerns over the government's involvement in the sector. Notably, ruling PNC’s parliamentary group leader, Ibrahim Falah, had previously denied government plans to introduce a taxi service. However, the official MoU signing reaffirms the administration’s commitment to modernizing and enhancing urban transportation.

With the preparations now underway, the government-backed EV taxi service is set to reshape mobility in Greater Malé, offering a sustainable, efficient, and high-quality transportation alternative.
