Maldives Hosts a Workshop to Enhance Human Rights Engagement for LDCs and SIDS

A three-day workshop organized by the Secretariat of the Voluntary Technical Assistance Trust Fund to support Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in engaging with the Human Rights Council (LDCs/SIDS Trust Fund) was inaugurated today in Malé, Maldives.
The workshop, administered by the Human Rights Council Branch of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), aims to enhance the capacity of LDCs and SIDS in the Asia region to engage effectively with the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms.
The opening ceremony was officiated by Dr. Hala Hameed, Secretary, Bilateral, along with Ambassador Omar Zniber, President of the Human Rights Council and Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN in Geneva. Dr. Salma Rasheed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN Office, also attended, along with other dignitaries from OHCHR and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in the Maldives.
Dr. Hameed emphasized the significance of the Trust Fund in empowering LDCs and SIDS in global human rights discussions. She expressed hope that the workshop would enhance participants' skills and networks, benefiting their future professional growth.
The workshop, running from 3-5 December 2024, features 15 participants from countries such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Gambia, Nepal, and Timor Leste, alongside six beneficiaries from the Maldives.
