President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a series of legislative amendments aimed at tackling the pressing issues of drug addiction and gang violence in the Maldives. The announcement was made on his official X account, underscoring the administration’s commitment to addressing the nation’s most critical social challenges.
In his statement, President Muizzu acknowledged that deficiencies in the existing legal framework have hindered state agencies in effectively combating narcotics addiction and related crimes. To address these issues, the government plans to submit amendments to the Drugs Act of the Maldives in the coming week. These changes, developed in consultation with relevant state agencies, aim to remove legal barriers and enhance the investigation and prosecution of drug-related cases.
Furthermore, the President revealed plans to introduce a new gang-related crime prevention bill to replace the current Prohibition on Gang Violence Act. The proposed legislation, which will be submitted to Parliament within the next two weeks, seeks to curb gang crimes closely linked to illicit narcotics and provide stronger safeguards for public safety.
